Legislative Art Exhibition

Caitlin Wemette and Brittni Curtin have been chosen as Maple Hill High School's representation at the 22nd Annual Legislative Student Art Exhibition. Both were accepted for their self-portraits. School districts from across New York State participate in this exhibition.

The NYSATA Legislative Exhibit is co-sponsored by the New York State Alliance for the Arts in Education (NYSSAE). This student art exhibit is held in the Legislative Well in the Capitol Building in Albany each spring. Legislators from across the state are invited to share the artistic accomplishments of their aspiring artist constituents at a reception for students, parents and teachers. Each student receives a certificate from NYSATA and many receive letters and/or photographs from their elected representatives.

13th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibition

Seven Maple Hill High School Art Students been juried into the 13th Annual Regional Juried Art Exhibition. This is a great honor, as the artworks are chosen by a panel of professional artists. This year artwork was juried by faculty members of The College of Saint Rose Art Department. This year 20 schools submitted 500 works of art. Eighty-eight 2D works were selected and 13- 3D works were selected. Maple Hill High School will be represented by Caitlin Wemette, Brittni Curtin, Matthew Fiebke, Kirsten Geracitano, Alicia Rivers-Barton, Ian Myers and Samantha Giacomino.

The opening reception will be held in conjunction with Albany's First Friday Events on March 2nd. After your tour of the High School Regional display, we encourage you to check out all the exciting things in downtown Albany. The High School Regional is a unique opportunity to be part of a juried exhibition. The Esther Massry Gallery is an exceptional venue to showcase our talented student artists.

Mrs. Pazienza's ceramic class has been busy glazing away on various projects. So far they have explored various handbuilding methods including slab and coil and have had lots of practice on the wheel. I will post more pictures soon, but here are a few I took the other day. Aren't they beautiful?!

Drawing and Painting Self-Portraits

I am so proud of Drawing and Painting! Take a look at a few of the self-portraits from this year. Students used water-soluble wash pencils. They were studying Photorealism. Photorealism is based on using the camera and photographs to gather information and creating a work of art that appears photographic. The term is primarily applied to paintings from the art movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Photorealism was a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and grew out of Pop Art.

Here is a simple fun assignment. We made these photos today in photography. Here is what you do:

Get a light source (we used our cell phones and some glow sticks). Turn the lights off. Put your camera on a tripod. Lower the ISO to 80 or 100. Use shutter speed priority and lower your Shutter Speed for a long exposure or if you have a DSLR put in on BULB.

If you have a simple point and shoot without shutter speed priority put it on the night landscape mode and turn your flash off.

Take your picture and start drawing! So much fun! I will post more pictures later, but these are some collaborative light drawings.

Land Art/ Earthworks 2011!

Today was great! We are all exhausted from a full day of Land Art activities. After studying the Land Art movement of the 1960's and 70's, Advanced Studio in Art created site specific, ephemeral sculptures in the woods behind the high school. We specifically studied the works of Robert Smithson and Andy Goldsworthy.

Land Art is a form of contemporary art. Also known also as Earthworks, or Earth Art, this movement emerged when a number of sculptors and painters became determined to heighten public awareness of our relationship with the natural world by intervening in the landscape in a series of thought-provoking constructions.

These (frequently massive) land-based interventions or artworks took a variety of forms, from large-scale land artworks like man-made curtains reaching across vast stretches of landscape, the encirclement of whole islands in coloured fabric, and reshaped waterways and volcanoes, to simple lines of footprints in the earth.

Andy Goldsworthy, is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalistproducing site-specific sculpture and land art situated in natural and urban settings. He lives and works in Scotland.The materials used in Andy Goldsworthy's art often include brightly-coloured flowers, icicles, leaves, mud, pinecones, snow, stone, twigs, and thorns. He has been quoted as saying, "I think it's incredibly brave to be working with flowers and leaves and petals. But I have to: I can't edit the materials I work with. My remit is to work with nature as a whole." For his ephemeral works, Goldsworthy often uses only his bare hands, teeth, and found tools to prepare and arrange the materials.

Robert Smithson is most well known for his provocative earthwork, the Spiral Jetty, made in 1970. This monumental earthwork was inspired in part when Smithson saw the Great Serpent Mound, a Pre-Columbian Indian monument in southwestern Ohio. The earthworks were a radical departure from making formal objects situated in a gallery setting.

Clark Art

Maple Hill High School students got a first-hand look at one of the most important artists in the Impressionism art movement on September 21 when they visited the Clark Art Institute to learn about Camille Pissarro.

The class trip provided students in French and Art classes an opportunity to view Pissarro's works, learn about the artist and even try to recreate his paintings to better understand his unique style.

"Camille Pissarro has been called the 'Dean of Impressionism'," explained art teacher Theresa Hovish. "His work embodied Impressionism's radical character more consistently than the paintings of Monet and the other artists associated with the movement."

Lecturers at the museum provided insight into Pissarro's life and works for students.

Students also visited the Clark's permanent collections, which focus almost exclusively on the Institute's founders – Sterling and Francine Clark – interest for European and American painting, sculpture, work on paper and decorative art from the Renaissance to the early 20th Century.

Students sketched a variety of artworks at the institute and the class trip also will be used in the students' studies as they write art criticisms both in English and French.

As part of the Clark Art Institute's committment to education the Institute paid the cost for the trip, including fuel for a bus to transport students. Thank you!

High School Juried Art Regional

We are extending an invitation to this year's prestigious High School Juried Regional Art Exhibition Opening reception is this Friday, April 1st from 5:30 to 9:00 PM. Our students' artwork was selected out of almost 400 works from 17 school districts for the 2011 HS Regional at the Opalka Gallery, Sage Albany. Works of art by Zach Hays, Anna Curtin, Franco Fettucia, Alex Grossman, Matthew Fiebke, Michelle Garcia, Alyxe Perry, Aaron Herr, Katherine Zink, and Mary Hadden were accepted by a panel of respected artists and college art department heads from the area. Here are the details: The show runs from March 20th - April 14th The Reception will be Friday, April 1st from 5:30 to 9:00 PM with a Keynote speaker and awards (6 awards) at 7:00 pm. This year the exhibition will be held at Opalka Gallery, Sage Albany in conjunction with First Friday Albany. EXHIBIT QUESTAR III RECEPTION Wednesday, April 13, 5-7 p.m. QUESTAR III EXHIBIT: April 13 – May 13, 2011 The 22nd Annual Questar III High School Invitational Art Exhibit, which will take place this year at WMHT headquarters in North Greenbush, is open to all high school students (9-12) in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties. Olympics of the Visual Arts

OVA yesterday was very successful. About 1,400 people were in attendance. Nineteen more districts than last year!

We had groups taking part in the Drawing, Painting, Fashion and Illustration categories. We are proud of all of our students for working hard and participating in this amazing day of creative celebration. We would like to congratulate Kirsten Geracitano, Michelle Garcia and Kelly McInerney for receiving 2nd place in the Drawing category! We would also like to congratulate Jennie Buckley, Jeremy Hempstead, Mary Hadden, Charlie Pomykaj, Wendy Nyugen, Brittany Geracitano, Aaron Herr, and Sarah Walling for their participation, hard work and dedication to OVA and the fine arts!

The Olympics of the Visual Arts (OVA) program provides an opportunity for students to participate in individual or group artistic problem solving. A new series of problems is posed every fall. Students create long-range solutions at their schools, and travel to the Saratoga Springs to compete on short-range problems in a day-long celebration of creativity. There are awards for each of the problem categories at every level.

Land Art 2010!

Advanced Studio in Art did a wonderful job with their Land Art projects yesterday. Take a look at some of the pictures.

Land Art is a modern art movement that explores the relationship between art and the environment in which it exists.

Although Land Art can be seen in museums, it is more commonly found outdoors. It will disappear over time. We call this ephemeral. All of our sculptures will erode in the coming days and months.

Students had to work collaboratively to create site-specific sculptures and document their work with digital photographs.

Land art is often inspired by natural processes. Land artists rejected the commercialization of art, and were also concerned for the environment. Their work reflected a general ‘back-to-the-land’ reaction against the destruction of the countryside through urbanization and industrialization.

Students participate in Empty Bowls

Mrs. Pazienza's ceramics class created bowls for the Empty Bowls in Troy. Empty Bowls is a local organization that raises money for local charities. See links for more information.

Carefully molding clay to create a unique bowl in art class, Maple Hill High School senior Mary Hadden explained the piece she was creating would help raise money for those in need.

“I like working with my hands,” Mary noted. “We’ll let these dry and then kiln dry them and glaze them. Then they’ll go to Empty Bowls in Troy to help others.”

Mary and her classmates in art teacher Suzanne Pazienza’s class have worked in recent weeks to create bowls for Empty Bowls, an event in Troy that raises money for local organizations.

The bowls will be donated, along with hundreds of others created by local schools and artists, to the event scheduled for Sunday, October 3 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the Italian American Community Center on Fifth Avenue.

At the 6th Annual Empty Bowls event, attendees will purchase one of the handcrafted bowls for $10. Local restaurants will then serve soup, stew or chowder in the bowls which attendees get to keep. All proceeds benefit organizations such as Joseph’s House, St. Mary’s Food Pantry and Troy Larger Parish Food Pantry.

In art class, students formed their bowls around molds and then added unique touches to each by using various techniques they learned. Senior Stephanie Muller, for example, used a paint brush and water to smooth her bowl's edges into layered leaves that resembled a flower.

Ms. Pazienza explained that when she heard about the event, she thought it would be a good way for her students to use the clay molding techniques they’ve learned in art class to create works that will help local charities.

“The Empty Bowls concept started nearly 20 years ago by a Michigan art teacher who’s students wanted to do something specific to address hunger issues,” Ms. Pazienza explained to her students. “Similar events are held nationwide in order to raise money and awareness about hunger.”

Exciting news from the Art Dept. at Maple Hill!

On March 31st, Matthew Busdiecker and Stephanie Muller will represent Maple Hill High School at the Questar III High School Art invitational at HVCC. Mary Hadden and Chelsea Stewart will have their work displayed on the second floor lobby of the Questar III offices.

On April 16th, sixteen Maple Hill High School students will exhibit artwork at Proctor's Theatre for the 2010 High School Regional Juried Art Exhibit! This event is held in conjunction with Schenectady's Art Night. Come enjoy some great artwork then see what downtown Schenectady has to offer.
